Kelp Wanted: Coastal Ecosystems and Sustainable Solutions

Our Role: Explorer collaborator as part of the National Geographic Society Educator – Explorer Exchange Programme

About the Project:

We (Chloe Nunn and Sarah Smith) wanted to develop students’ understanding of UK coastal ecosystems and their critical importance to society. Our learners explored interactions between key coastal habitats and species such as seals and seaweed, with UK communities, including Plymouth. We found that students quickly became advocates of sustainable practices such as reducing pollution and damaging fishing methods, demonstrated through letters to the Prime Minister, children’s books, and business ideas.

Our goal was to develop students’ understanding of critically important UK coastal ecosystems. Students explored the complex interactions between these ecosystems and human activities, analysed the impacts of environmental changes, and evaluated the balance between economic development and environmental conservation. By the end of the unit, students were equipped with the knowledge and skills to advocate for sustainable practices, appreciate the value of coastal ecosystems, and consider their role in preserving these vital environments for future generations.
